At Home of 12 Volt Northern, we specialise in supplying and installing premium lithium battery systems for caravans, campers and 4WDs. Below are the most common questions we’re asked about lithium deep cycle batteries.
What is a LiFePO4 Lithium Battery?
LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) is the safest and most stable lithium battery chemistry available for 12V systems.
Compared to AGM batteries, lithium offers:
Significantly lighter weight
Higher usable capacity
Faster charging
Longer lifespan
Stable voltage under load
We supply quality lithium solutions including the range from Thumper.
Are Lithium Batteries Better Than AGM?
In most touring and caravan applications — yes.
Lithium batteries:
Provide more usable capacity (up to 100% depth of discharge)
Maintain higher voltage for longer
Charge much faster
Last significantly more cycles
Weigh less than half of a comparable AGM
AGM may still suit certain budget or under-bonnet applications, but for serious off-grid use, lithium is superior.
Can I Run a 240V Inverter from a Lithium Battery?
Yes — provided the battery’s BMS (Battery Management System) supports the required discharge current.
Example:
200A BMS supports up to 2400W continuous
300A BMS supports up to 3600W continuous
If you are running coffee machines, induction cooktops or air fryers, correct battery sizing is critical. We recommend speaking with our team before installing large inverters.
What Happens If I Overload the Battery?
Lithium batteries have an internal BMS that protects against:
Over discharge
Over charge
Short circuit
Excessive current draw
High temperature
If overloaded, the battery will disconnect to protect itself. In most cases, reconnecting a charger will reactivate the system.
Repeated overloading is not recommended and can damage internal components.
Do I Need a Lithium Charger?
We strongly recommend using a lithium-compatible charger for best performance and longevity.
Many lithium batteries can charge on an AGM setting, however:
Charging voltage may not be optimal
Battery may not reach full capacity
Long-term lifespan can be reduced
If upgrading to lithium, it’s worth checking your DC-DC charger and 240V charger settings.
Can I Use Solar Panels with Lithium?
Yes — as long as the solar regulator is compatible with lithium or AGM settings.
Unregulated panels should not be connected directly to lithium batteries, as voltage spikes can trigger BMS protection.
Can Lithium Batteries Be Mounted on Their Side?
Most quality LiFePO4 batteries are fully sealed and can be mounted on any angle (except upside down in some cases).
They are not suitable for under-bonnet installation unless specifically designed for high-temperature environments.
Can I Connect Multiple Lithium Batteries Together?
Yes.
Parallel connection – increases capacity (AH)
Series connection – increases voltage (up to manufacturer limits)
For series setups, batteries must be identical in brand, model and capacity to ensure even load distribution.
We recommend professional advice before wiring multiple batteries.
Can Lithium Batteries Be Used for Starting?
No — standard deep cycle lithium batteries are not designed for cranking applications.
There are specific lithium cranking batteries available, but deep cycle batteries should only be used to run accessories and appliances.
How Long Do Lithium Batteries Last?
Lithium batteries are rated in cycles (charge and discharge).
Quality LiFePO4 batteries can provide:
2,000–5,000+ cycles depending on depth of discharge
8–15 years of realistic touring use when installed correctly
Proper charging and system design significantly affect lifespan.
How Do I Monitor Lithium Battery Charge Level?
Voltage alone is not an accurate indicator of lithium state of charge.
The best method is:
Built-in Bluetooth monitoring
External battery monitor (shunt-based system)
Bluetooth monitoring allows you to track:
Remaining capacity (%)
Amp hours remaining
Charge and discharge rates
Estimated time remaining
What Voltage is “Flat” on a Lithium Battery?
Lithium batteries maintain higher voltage for most of their discharge cycle.
Approximate guide:
~13.4V = 100% (at rest)
~12.0V = approx 10% remaining
When capacity is exhausted, the BMS will automatically disconnect to protect the battery.
